G.L.O.W. — Girls Leading Our World
Expanding STEAM and leadership opportunities for girls through mentorship, hands-on workshops, and project-based learning.
01 Why I started it
The room matters
Bringing STEAM to girls, one mentor at a time.
I've watched capable girls decide they weren't "the robotics kind of person" — usually not because of the work, but because of who else was in the room. That decision often gets made in middle school, and it's hard to reverse.
My own path in STEM was shaped by mentors who took my questions seriously before I had any results to show for them. G.L.O.W. is my attempt to make that less a matter of luck: to build rooms where a girl can build her first robot, write her first program, or present her first project next to someone who has already done it and will tell her how.
02 Mission
What we do
Workshops, mentorship, and collaborative projects across science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics — designed so that participants make something rather than watch someone make it.
Community
A network where girls learn alongside people at similar stages, not just above them.
Hands-on building
Projects where participants design, build, and test something they chose.
Pathways
Connecting participants to programs, competitions, and opportunities they didn't know existed.
Confidence
Practice presenting and defending your own work, which is most of what STEM actually asks of you.
03 On mentoring
Why I keep doing it
Teaching is the fastest way to find out whether you understand something. When a student asks why a loop runs the way it does, or why a sensor reading drifts, I frequently discover that my own answer was a description rather than an explanation.
The other reason is simpler. Mentoring is mostly listening and being present — and the students I work with ask questions that break my assumptions. They're going to be better engineers than I am, and I'd like to have been useful on the way there.
